Playmate of the Month December 1988 - Katariina Souri

Description:
Yep, she's really Finnish - a model of Scandinavian design who comes to you by way of Helsinki, Rome and Rapid City, South Dakota. Confusing? Her hair color changes as often as the weather in her homeland, her address changes almost as often and her accent is a concatenation of Finn lilt and South Dakota drawl. "Yep," says Katariina Souri, "it is a confusing. I guess I'm a combination of things, Finnish and American. Is that good or bad?" In this case, all to the good - the collision of hemispheres has brought forth a confusing, intriguing combination of the best of East and West. Katariina grew up "spoiled and happy" in Helsinki, where she became, at the age of 15, the finest-looking bowling champion in history. "My dad loved to bowl, and he used to take me along when I was ," she explains. "I got pretty good and even won the national championship for girls under 18. Daddy was very proud of that." Shortly thereafter, a bit weary of snow and solitude - "Finland was too quiet for me" - Katariina joined an exchange program, jetted to remotest Rapid City and gave her high school classmates a crash course in Eurostyle. Stevens High School is still reeling. "They found me pretty wild," Katariina says of the teachers and schoolmates she bowled over at Stevens High. "I dressed punk. I dyed my hair blonde - or red and black - or wore it in a Mohawk. I wore wigs, and sometimes a tuxedo, to school." To top it off, this Finnish ambassador of punk went out for the bowling team and trounced all the guys. She was promptly bounced from the squad. "They said it was a boys' team." Kata has warm memories of her Dakota days. She treasures her Stevens diploma and now confuses Finn friends with her favorite American expression: "Yep!"
"People in the U.S. are extroverts. I like that. Finnish people are shy, not as wild. That is not always bad - American men, I think, can be a too aggressive. All they want is to get into your pants! Finnish men have better manners. They can wait, you know, a couple of weeks," Katariina says, laughing. Not that she minds a American lust directed her way - it's just that Eurostyle is different. "I don't go crazy over how many muscles a guy has or how hairy his chest is. I kind of like skinny, feminine guys. One of my boyfriends in Finland used to wear make-up. We'd go out and some people thought we were sisters. It was kind of embarrassing, but kind of interesting, too." Don't abandon hope, American guys: The more she sees of American chests, Katariina says, the better she likes them. Vacationing in Italy last year, Katariina caught the eye of a fashion photographer. Next thing she knew, she was in the Italian edition of Playboy. Now she's back in the States as Miss December. Next up: a fashion shoot in Paris. Will she sit still long enough for American males to prove that they want more from her - or at least others things as well -- than entree into her pants? That answer, Katariina says with a smile, is yep.

Playmate of the Month January 1979 - Candy Loving

Description:
Gentlemen, your attention please! The votes have been tabulated and we have a winner. And she is (dare we say it?) as sweet to the eyes as her name is on our own lips: Candy. Candy Loving.
Playboy was almost three years old when Candy was born in Oswego, Kansas. The Playmate for September 1956 was Elsa Sorensen (remember Elsa, all you collectors?) and Dwight Eisenhower was running for election to his second term.

When Candy was still a baby, her parents moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma, where she lived until four years ago, when she left for the University of Oklahoma in Norman. She's now a senior, majoring in public relations.

Ponca City's main industry is the Continental Oil Company. Candy's mother, Rosemary, has worked there for years, along with a sizable portion of Ponca City's population; there are oil tanks all around. The odor of oil permeates the air. The main Saturday night activities are dragging Grand Avenue. When Candy was a student at Ponca City Senior High, she had a green Maverick with an ice chest in the back and a tape deck that played mostly Edgar Winter and The Beatles. She was then, and is now, a lady of uncomplicated tastes.

For example, she began reading her boyfriends' copies of Playboy while in high school, and has a surprisingly good recall of the past six years' Playmates. She was jealous of the gatefold girls, of course ("I used to think, 'Oooh, they make me so sick!"), but time heals all wounds.

On or about March 31, 1978, Candy, encouraged by her family and friends, arrived alone at nine A.M. at the Ramada Inn in Norman, where Assistant Photography Editor Michael Berry was helping conduct the 25th Anniversary Playmate Hunt. Candy was Berry's first appointment of the day, and from the way Candy describes it, he knew right away he wasn't meeting just any old Okette.

"When Mike came to the door, I didn't know what to expect, but there he was, this cute guy with his hair slicked back because he'd just stepped out of the shower. He was kind of sleepy, like he'd just gotten up. He asked me in for coffee and I asked him if he had chocolate milk. He ordered some and we sat and talked for about 40 minutes before he photographed me." (Oh, Mike, you are a wily one. It was supposed to be ten minutes per girl, Mike, ten minutes.)

As soon as we received the Polaroids of Candy, we flew her to Chicago for what was to be the first of eight shooting sessions over a three-month period.

Staff photographer Pompeo Posar, who was the first of our photographers to shoot color slides of Candy, noticed two things from the start. The first was that she was a very good model, considering that she had no previous experience, and the second was that she had to be fed regularly.

"I absolutely cannot go on an empty stomach for any length of time," she says firmly. "I have to eat. Three evenly spaced full meals a day, with maybe a snack now and then, and I'm OK. And if I can't eat, I do best with a glass of milk. Milk is one of my favorite foods. White or chocolate, I love milk."

Obviously, fat is not a problem for Candy. What she doesn't burn up, she works off twice a week in 40-to-60-minute workouts on Nautilus fitness machines, followed by vigorous swimming. But if food has a special meaning for her, it probably reminds her of her family, the people she says give her the greatest joy.

Her parents were divorced when she was ten, and her mother often worked at two jobs to supposrt Candy and her three simblings: older sister Cassi, 28; Kevin, 27; and younger sister, Cari, 20, who's also a student at OU. But Candy's warm, cheerful personality is ample evidence that she grew up in a loving environment.

"My mother treated each of us as though we were special," she says. "I had to learn to share early. I had to accept the fact that I couldn't always have new shoes when I wanted them. I learned a lot from my brother and sisters, and I love them very much."

Candy's background didn't prepare her for the luxuries of Playboy's hospitality she's enjoyed since becoming a finalist. She admits that when she arrived at Playboy Mansion West for a week-long stay and an introduction to Hefner, she could hardly adjust to the royal treatment she received. "I couldn't believe the service," she says. "I'm not used to having my meals cooked for me -- and whatever I wanted, at that! The first time I got hungry I went to the kitchen and started browsing in the refrigerator. One of the kitchen staff politely told me to take it easy, get out of the kitchen and let him serve me. It was marvelous."

When Candy was told that she had been chosen for our 25th Anniversary issue, she immediately called her mother from Playboy Mansion West, where she was staying with a number of other finalists. "Mom said, 'Congratulations, beautiful! I'm glad you're doing what you want to do. I'm proud of you and I love you.'" With a mom like that, it's easy to see why Candy's so secure and confidant.

Levelheaded lady that she is, she intends to use some of her prize money to pay her tuition for the balance of her senior year, then "put the rest in a savings account so I'll have some security until I get settled into a profession." If things work out as she'd like, she'll take a job in public relations for a national magazine soon after she graduates.

Until then, she'll be traveling, meeting people all over America, and, we hope, enjoying herself immensely. "I feel so lucky, so fortunate to have been chosen," she says. "Why, if it weren't for this, I'd just be another girl from Oklahoma."

Not necessarily, Candy. We think someone would have discovered you eventually, but we're awfully glad it was us. You make us want to say, in the immortal words of Jackie Gleason, "How sweet it is!"

Employee of the Month - Brianna Alexia

Description:

Playboy: What do you do?

Brianna: I work for a high-end private airline. I track flights and weather issues. I make sure passengers have everything they need for their trips: hotels, catering, shopping, entertainment and rental cars.

Playboy: How did you get into the aviation field?

Brianna: Years ago a friend who worked for Pan Am-yes, that many years ago-got me a job. I've been flying around the world ever since.

Playboy: Did you ever work as a stewardess?

Brianna: That's flight attendant! And yes, I have.

Playboy: What type of clientele does your airline serve?

Brianna: They're mostly bankers and celebrities.

Playboy: Has the recession hurt the business?

Brianna: No, bankers still fly.

Playboy: What's your favorite part of the job?

Brianna: I suppose in this economy it's actually just being employed. But it's also nice to know I can hop a flight to St. Barts whenever I please.

Playboy: Where do you go when you're not flying to exotic locations?

Brianna: I'm a simple girl; my friends and I go to Buffalo Wild Wings or out for sake every week. We go barhopping. We go to baseball, football and hockey games.

Playboy: Would you prefer a guy to whisk you off to a Caribbean island or buy you a drink at a chain restaurant?

Brianna: It doesn't matter where we are or what we do. I just want to be romanced-although I can get us a discount to the Caribbean.

Playboy: Are you a member of the mile-high club?

Brianna: No. In the biz, we consider that tacky.

Playboy: Okay, here's another tacky question: Would you ever consider grooming yourself in the "landing strip" pattern?

Brianna: I don't like to shave and tell. Oh, and in the spirit of being corny, just know I can fly you to places you've never been.

Playmate of the Month January 1984 - Penny Baker

Description:
Pause awhile before you read on. Gaze into the eyes of the woman on the opposite page. Thank you. You see, we traveled thousands of miles, shot thousands of Polaroids and interviewed thousands of women to find her. And now that we've found her, our greatest joy is sharing her beauty with you. When Penny Baker entered our 30th Anniversary Playmate Hunt last August in our home town, Chicago, she chanced to meet our Associate Photography Editor Janice Moses. Moses recalls, "She was pretty, sweet, bright, refreshing and fairly confident for a 17-year-old." And today, that description still fits Penny except for two things: She's now 18 and she's a tad more confident, because we've chosen her to crown Playboy's three decades of America's most beautiful women.
Despite her tender age, Penny is far from a neophyte in the world of modeling. She broke into the business at the age of 13, after spending a summer vacation in modeling school. Since there weren't many calls for models (13 or otherwise) in her home town of Springville, New York, she had to travel, after school or on weekends, to Buffalo, 25 miles away.
"My parents were wonderful," says Penny, looking back on that time with a matured perspective. "They had to drive me back and forth, since I was too young to drive myself, and I often wasn't getting paid more than $25 per job. My parents were paying for the gas and buying me lunch and, probably, spending as much as I was earning. But they always let me keep every dollar I earned." Her father, Leslie, an executive for a New York manufacturer, and her mother, Frances, chose to join her rather than fight with her.
"From the time I was about 11, when I began looking at fashion magazines, I wanted to be a model. I'd stare at cover girls and wish I could be just like them." It was more than wishing; it was believing, deep down inside that she coule be a successful model that gave Penny so much chutzpah at such an early age. For instance, when she was 15, her agency in Buffalo entered her in the yearly Modeling Association of America International (M.A.A.I.) competition, held that year in the Waldorf-Astoria. "I could tell that most of the girls weren't doing very well," she recalls, "until one girl, the one just before me, got up and did a terrifically animated series of poses. I thought, If that's what it takes, I can do better than that, so when my turn came, I went up there with - 'Ta-taaa!'" She spreads her arms, grins and giggles as she replays the moment. "And, sure enough, I won."
As a result, she was sought out by several scouts from the big New York modeling agencies who convinced her that her prospects were excellent. "However, they also told me that I was still too young to live in New York by myself, and they told me to get in touch with them in a year, when I'd finished high school."
A year later, after taking more than a full load of classes in order to graduate (with nearly straight A's, by the way), Penny, with her parents' permission, moved to New York and set up housekeeping with four other models in a building populated largely by young people with budding performing careers.
"It was great, kind of like a big dormitory. We'd all get up early, wave to one another on our way to our various appointments, then come back at the end of the day and trade success or disappointment stories and have potluck dinners."
We wondered if her parents might not have been just the slightest bit worried that she could venture down the path of rack and ruin, and she replied, "First of all, my parents never talked to us [Penny and her older sister and two brothers] about sex. It just never came up. They knew I dated, but we never talked about it when I was in Springville and they didn't ask about it when I was in New York. But since I'd always been a good student and had never gotten in trouble, I guess they figured I had pretty good judgment."
She learned a lot in the Big Apple, including how to handle men instead of the "farm boys" she had dated in Springville. "I found that when I wanted to say no, I could; it was usually no problem."
She also learned the hard realities of the super-competitive New York fashion business. "I was able to pay my rent and buy groceries, but that was about it. The fact is, I just don't look like the high-fashion type. I'm a too short and a too busty."
When her roommates began to split up and go their separate ways, Penny realized that she would be soon faced with the responsibility of paying rent all by herself. "Several of the agency people I talked with in New York suggested that I move to Chicago, where, they said, I might have a better chance of getting a lot of work." So she moved to Chicago in March 1983 and signed up with Playboy Models in April.
Shortly thereafter, she appeared in a promotional poster for Playboy's pre-season football forecast, in which she wore a sexy blue football jersey. That and other jobs enabled Penny to settle into Chicago fairly comfortably. Then she heard about the 30th Anniversary Playmate Hunt.
"The people at Playboy Models suggested I enter. Once I made up my mind, I wasn't going to settle for being anything less than the 30th Anniversary Playmate."
Finally, after an August visit to Playboy Mansion West to meet Editor/Publisher Hugh Hefner, Penny learned that she was our choice. Her parents and siblings are "happy for me," and she plans to use her $30,000 fee to help finance a college education in computer science.
But for the next year, she simply looks forward to traveling and modeling for Playboy, Playboy Models and Playboy Video Productions. "When this year's over, I'll go to school. But I want to enjoy this while it's happening."
During the next year, at least, Penny plans to make Chicago her home. Then, with more experience under her belt, she may go back to New York, where she plans to attend Pace College. Meanwhile, she says, "I'm enjoying Chicago."
And we enjoy having you here, Penny. Congratulations. And thanks for making us look good.
